Mecca of Mormonism Receivesthe Provocative Show
As we know, Parker and Stone are risky guys in their projects. One more proof of that is “Book of Mormon” staging is Salt Lake City. Utah comprises two-third of population whose religion is Mormonism. It would seem quite profane to bring the play to the capital of this faith.
“It just feels very much like it’s coming home”, Stone said. Let’s see how it will be welcomed by Mormons. Easily-offended people will not come to the show. However, curious people is expected to visit “The book of Mormon” in order to understand what’s so much hype around it.
The president of the church Fair Mormon, Scott Gordon, made the following assumption: “Mormons will let the rest of the state enjoy the performance, so to say, they will turn the other cheek”. That is why no protests the show will provoke.
Mr. Bowman, the author of “The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith”, draws a parallel between real Mormons and the ones presented in the play. According to his words, “Instead of the presentation of Mormons being very sinister and conniving and corrupt, Mormons are kind of naive, very nice and very dumb”.
The brightest proof for the above-mentioned statement is the silence Mormons keeps since the show’s run. They just keep repeating such a phrase: “The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but the Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change people’s lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ”.
